As a general rule of thumb, walking down a decrepit alleyway is something we avoid, even in NYC and Melbourne. More so in Malaysia… So you can imagine our anxiety when Google Maps led us down a weird little alley to get to this supposedly Michelin-starred kuih shop.

Nestled along Lebuh Chulia in Penang, Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Kuih is a time capsule of flavours and traditions. Dating back to 1933, this quaint establishment has been making Nyonya kuih for generations, making it one of Penang’s oldest and most cherished Nyonya kuih makers.

The place is unique; it looks small from the outside, but it's actually spacious inside. To get to the seats, we pass through the kitchen area, so we can watch the cake-making process.

A bit overhyped place. Food is only mediocre. We ordered the Laksa, Popiah and some Nyonya kueh. The Laksa is OK. However, the Popiah was disappointing. As it had the taste and smell of as if the oil was reused over many times.

I'm always skeptical about places listed in the Michelin Guide, and Moh Teng Pheow, unsurprisingly, was another place that is not worth the hype. You have to walk through the production area to get to the retail counter and dining room.

Great great cozy place tucked away in a small side lane next to Muntri rd. Michelin star awarded simple yet fabulous nyonya fare. Great selection of delicate cakes at marvelous prices and local coffee. After 4.30 is take away only

The food was tasty. I think they were quite busy and may have misheard my order, so I got a different pastry than the one I wanted. It was very affordable though, so I didn’t really mind. 😊

Another Michelin bib. Very nice nyonya Kueh n very unique drinks. Worth to come for a snack n lepak. Huge seating space on top floor like 100 ft long. Place is Instagramable
